For the first time the classical period, artist felt free to show the beauty of the human body. They were helped by the two things- the old Greek ideas of proportion and perspective, and the new research on how the body worked. A nude sculpture such as Michelangelo’s David shows a deep knowledge of the action of muscles, sinews and bones.
Almost all medieval art had depicted religious subject. Renaissance artist began to paint other things, such as landscapes and sense of gods and goddesses from mythology. They also painted portraits- of their patrons and of themselves- which expressed human emotions more openly than ever before.
