Roots play two roles in the Life of a tree. They anchor it firmly to the soil and supply the tree with and nutrients absorbed from the soil. Roots come in an amazing variety there are roots that flourish in water and others that dangle in air.
There are two kinds of roots system. One is the taproot system. In this system, there is a main root that is much larger than the other branching roots. The second system is the diffuse system. In the system there are many thin roots with smaller roots branching out.
Roots are useful to us too. Some taproots, such as the beet, carrot, parsnip, radish, turnip, sweet potato and tapioca are used as food. Many fibrous and taproots are used for flavorings or in making medicine.
