Why did the Spanish armada set out to attack?

Philip of Spain had co- ruled England his Catholic wife Queen Mary. He wanted England to return to Catholicism when after Mary’s death her half –sister, the protestant Elizabeth refused to marry him, so with the pope’s approval, he set out to conquer England and restore the Catholic faith there.

In 1588, he sent an invasion fleet of more than 130 ships across the English Channel. However, the Armada was defeated and its remnants to Spain in the autumn.
