Why are nuclear reactors continually monitored?

People worry about nuclear power because when the energy is released from an atom, deadly rays, called radiation, can escape. Radiation is very harmful when it enters the body. When too much radiation passes through living cells, it may damage the cells or weaken the body’s defenses against disease. A typical nuclear power station produces about 20 bashful of dangerous waste each year. It is poured into steel tanks that are then buried in concrete.
