Why do trees have leaves ?

The leaves are where most plants, including trees, manufacture their food. The substance that makes leaves green is called chlorophyll, which is contained in special cells called chloroplast within them. The leaves are shaped and arranged to catch as much sunlight as possible because the chloroplast use energy from sun to convert water and minerals from the soils and carbon dioxide from the air into sugars. This process is called photosynthesis which means making food from sun light.
